Hi ,
Last time, we came home. We closed out a long journey and found something surprising at the end of it: the self you’d been reaching for had been here all along, waiting underneath every role you’ve ever played. It was a homecoming. And homecomings feel like endings.
Except this one isn’t.
Because here’s the thing about arriving. You walk through the door, you set down your bags, you feel that deep exhale of oh, this is me. And then, somewhere in the quiet that follows, a smaller voice asks the question nobody tells you is coming.
Okay. Now what?
The problem: knowing your Sparketype® and filing it away.
More than a million people have taken the Sparketype® Assessment. Found at www.sparketype.com That’s over 50 million data points about what makes human beings come alive. And for so many, discovering their result feels like a homecoming. An immediate, almost physical ‘oh, that’s why’. Suddenly a hundred old choices make sense. The jobs that drained you. The projects you’d have done for free. The pattern you could never quite name.
And then what happens?
For a lot of people, the result gets read. Shared with a partner. Nodded at. And then, gently, filed away. Like a horoscope you found interesting on a Tuesday. Life resumes. Same week. Same work. Same gap between how it looks and how it feels.
Here’s what I want to say, because it’s easy to miss. Knowing who you are was never the destination. It’s the trailhead.
Every day, somewhere, someone types the same question into a search box. What should I do with my life?Millions of us have asked it. And it’s the wrong question. Not because the longing underneath it is wrong, but because it sends you looking outward for an answer that only makes sense once you know who’s asking.
The better question is, what am I here to do?
Your Sparketype® answers the first half of that. It names the essential nature of the work that makes you come alive. What it can’t do is walk the path for you.
A thought leader worth hearing on this:
The writer and theologian Frederick Buechner put it more beautifully than I ever could. In Wishful Thinking, he wrote:
“The place God calls you to, is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”
Whatever your relationship with the language of calling, stay with the two halves of that sentence. Your deep gladness. And the world’s deep hunger.
The insight: Notice that Buechner puts two things in that sentence, not one. Most of us only ever chase the first. Your Sparketype® is a near-perfect name for your deep gladness. The work that lights you up from the inside. But gladness, on its own, is a feeling. A private warmth. It becomes a life when it meets something outside you that actually needs it. Home is the gladness. The way forward is where that gladness meets the hunger.
The implication: Knowing your Sparketype® is necessary. It’s just not sufficient. And that changes the question you’ve been carrying. It’s no longer who am I? You’ve done that work. You came home. The new question, the one this next stretch of letters is really about, is this: where does what makes me come alive, meet something that matters?
That’s the shift. The way home is the way forward. You come home to who you already are, so you can become who you’re capable of being.
How this actually gets solved — in the real world.
Stop treating your profile as a label. Start using it as a compass.
Most people read their Sparketype® result once and keep only the headline. The Primary. But there are three parts, and each one is a different reading on the same instrument.
Your Primary is your source fuel. The work that pulls you even when the day is hard, even when nobody’s watching, even when it costs you.
Your Shadow is your Primary’s amplifier. Not a flaw. The supporting work you do in service of doing your Primary better.
Your Anti-Sparketype® is the work that empties you. And knowing it is a gift, because it tells you precisely what to protect yourself from.
So, here’s the honest, unglamorous move. Re-read all three. Then look at the actual week in front of you, the real one, with its meetings and its messages and its to-do list, and find one place where your gladness could meet a real need. A person. A problem. A team. A cause.
Not a grand reinvention. One place. Small and real beats big and imagined, every single time.
You don’t need the whole map. You never did. You need the next step.
Tie the bow: where deep gladness meets the world’s hunger, for each Sparketype®.
• The Maven (I live to learn): your gladness is going deep. It meets the hunger of people who need someone to dive in and come back with clarity they couldn’t find alone.
• The Maker (I make ideas manifest): your gladness is bringing things into being. It meets the hunger for the thing that simply won’t exist unless someone builds it.
• The Scientist (I figure things out): your gladness is cracking the puzzle. It meets the hunger of people stuck on a problem no one else can solve.
• The Essentialist (I create order from chaos): your gladness is making things clear. It meets the hunger of people drowning in mess who need a path they can actually follow.
• The Performer (I turn moments into magic): your gladness is lifting a room. It meets the hunger of people who need to feel something, to be moved out of the numb.
• The Sage (I awaken insight): your gladness is helping people see. It meets the hunger of those circling the same question, needing light more than answers.
• The Warrior (I gather and lead people): your gladness is rallying and leading. It meets the hunger of people who need someone to take point and move them forward together.
• The Advisor (I guide to grow): your gladness is helping someone become more. It meets the hunger of people on the edge of their own next chapter, needing a steady hand.
• The Advocate (I’m your champion): your gladness is standing up for what’s right. It meets the hunger of people and causes with no one in their corner.
• The Nurturer (I’ve got you): your gladness is caring well. It meets the hunger of people who need to feel held. That includes you.
Same gladness. Ten different hungers waiting for it.
The Practical Move:
Something to sit with this week.
Re-read your Sparketype® profile this week. All three parts, and don’t skip the Anti. Then sit with one question:
Where, this week, could my deep gladness meet a real hunger?
Not someday. This week. Write down the one place that comes to mind, even if it feels small. Especially if it feels small.
One more thing, for the coaches, leaders, and people-practitioners reading.
Here’s something I’ve come to believe after a lot of these conversations. Most of your clients and your team members know far less about what makes them come alive than they think they do. They’ve got the headline. They’re missing the compass.
And the real work, the work that actually changes how someone shows up, isn’t in helping them discover their Sparketype®. It’s in helping them move from knowing it to using it. From the label to the compass.
That’s exactly what the Certified Sparketype® Advisor (CSA) program is built for. A 12-week certification that prepares you to do this work with real depth and real care. Our current cohort is well underway, and I’ll be honest, watching it has been one of the quiet joys of this year. Applications are now open for the next cohort, starting in January. .. [Learn more and apply.]
Over the coming weeks, I’m going to share what actually comes after knowing your Sparketype®. The path, the obstacles, the honest middle of it. And there’s something the team has been building for a while now, something that opens in November, made for exactly this moment. The now what. More on that soon.
For today, this is enough: home was never the end of the road. It’s where the road finally starts to make sense.
Talk soon,
Mark & The Sparked Team
